The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide unit is investigating the deputy involved shooting of an armed robber that occurred Wednesday June 4, 2014, at a Family Dollar store in the 13700 block of Kuykendahl in north Harris County.

Investigators stated that a suspicious male was observed by the store manager around 9:00 pm walking to the rear of the store and entering a storeroom. The manager, fearing that the male was concealing himself to rob the store after closing called 911.

Deputies arrived on scene and set a perimeter around the business. As deputies entered the store, the suspect fled through a rear exit door.

Deputy J. I. Gonzales, a 6 year veteran assigned to patrol, encountered the suspect as he ran out the door. The suspect, armed with handgun, ran towards the deputy as he attempted to flee.

The deputy fearing for his life and that of other deputies discharged his weapon striking the suspect.

The suspect, who has yet to be identified, was transported by EMS to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. Deputy Gonzales was not injured.

Per Protocol, the Harris County Sheriff’s Internal Affairs and the Office of Inspector General will investigate this incident. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct an independent investigation of the shooting.
