Authorities say a north central Indiana pilot escaped injury after landing his plane without having its landing gear down.

The single-engine plane landed on its underbelly Tuesday morning halfway down the runway at the Peru Municipal Airport about 70 miles north of Indianapolis. The plane received moderate damage and the runway minor damage.

The Miami County Sheriff's Department says 75-year-old John Lindgren of Galveston told officers he thought his landing gear was down as he attempted an emergency landing.

The runway was closed for the Federal Aviation Administration to investigate.
