On December 9th 2011 Dominque Alonzo Stokes was stopped by Austin Police Officers while operating a motor vehicle found to be stolen out of Beaumont, TX. Stokes flees the officers on foot then he is taken into custody. During the arrest Stokes was found to be in possession of a semi-automatic handgun.

On December 19th 2011 Texas City Police Captain Ross Clements read an article in the Galveston Police News reported the arrest of Galveston native, Dominique Alonzo Stokes in Austin, Texas. Captain Clements then instructs Texas City Police Detectives to contact Austin Police Detectives regarding the details of Stokes arrest.

On December 21st 2011 the semi-automatic handgun found in possession of Stokes is compared to firearm evidence collected at 709 N. Amburn Rd. The Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab found the evidence to be a match to the handgun found in the possession of Dominique Alonzo Stokes.

On February 1st 2012, Texas City Police Detectives traveled to the Travis County Jail, in Austin, Texas and served Dominique Alonzo Stokes with (2) warrants for (2) counts of Capital Murder.

On behalf of the City of Texas City and the Vargas family, we want to thank Austin Police Detectives; Roger Boudreau, Doug Skolaut, T.J. Vineyard, Austin P.D., Travis County Sheriff's Office and Mainland Crime Stoppers for their assistance in making this arrest.

Stokes is the first arrest of the multiple suspects involved in the horrific murder of 15 year old Miranda Vargas and her father Jorge Vargas. The investigation has revealed at this time that this crime was not a random act. The investigation has determined that the Vargas residence was targeted.
