Criminal District Attorney

GALVESTON, TX – Galveston County Criminal District Attorney Jack Roady announced today that Richard Alan Collier pled guilty today in the 56th District Court to the offense of Attempt to Commit Illegal Voting, a violation of the Texas Election Code. Collier claimed residence in both Minnesota and Galveston County, Texas. He committed the offense during the November 2012 general election in which he requested and submitted absentee ballots to vote in both Anoka County, Minnesota and Galveston County, Texas.

Voting officials in Galveston County became aware of Collier’s actions when they received a tip that Collier had posted a Facebook message about voting twice in that election. The Public Integrity Division of the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office conducted an investigation in which Investigator Carolyn Adkins recovered voting records and documents from both counties.

Collier was convicted of the offense as a misdemeanor and the punishment assessed was a $4,000.00 fine. Assistant District Attorney James Haugh represented the State of Texas. Mr. Collier was represented by attorney Jeffrey Gelb.
