Teen Homicide Suspect Apprehended

Dayton, OH - Springfield Chief of Police Stephen P. Moody and U.S. Marshal Peter C. Tobin announce that Springfield teenager, Tyrin Hawkins, was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals led Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST) early this morning after investigators pieced together tips and other information that led them to the King's Court apartment complex in Dayton. Task force officers and Deputy U.S. Marshals were able to locate and arrest Hawkins without incident despite his alleged previous comments of a possible gun battle with police to avoid capture.

The Springfield Police Department is a participating member of SOFAST so the task force was immediately involved in the fugitive investigation from the time the suspect was identified and the
warrant was issued.

Hawkins was identified by the Springfield Police Department as the person responsible for an early Easter morning shooting in Springfield that resulted in the death of another Springfield teen and star high school athlete. The shooting rocked the community and was a very emotional event for fellow high school students and faculty who knew both Hawkins and the deceased. Chief Moody of the Springfield Police Department expressed his appreciation to his officers and the U.S. Marshals Service for the safe capture of Hawkins and hopes the school and community will be able to move forward.

SOFAST is a multi-jurisdictional task force comprised of the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Ohio Adult Parole Authority, Dayton Police Department, Springfield Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Clark County Sheriffs Office, Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Miami County Sheriffs Office, Wright State University Police, Greeneville Police Department, Grandview Hospital Police Department, Oakwood Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, andthe Springboro Police Department.

The U.S. Marshals Service is the nation's primary fugitive hunting organization and captures more federal fugitives each year than all other law enforcement agencies combined.

Additional information about the U.S. Marshals Service can be found at
