Navasota High School sophomore Kourtney Marie Horton, 16, of Plantersville, died Wednesday, May 20, nearly two weeks after she suffered severe head injuries in a one-vehicle accident in Waller County. Charges are pending against driver Clinton B. Theiss Jr., 19, of Waller.
According to a report by Department of Public Safety Trooper M. Gore, Theiss was headed south on Field Store Road in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix at an unsafe speed when he appeared to have slightly run off the west shoulder, took faulty evasive action and lost control of the vehicle. The car slid sideways and crossed the northbound lane before it ran off the road and into a ditch, where it continued through a barbwire fence.
The Grand Prix then struck two trees. Two passengers, including Horton and Michael Higgins of Waller, were ejected.
The three were taken by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, along with passenger Robert Paul of Plantersville.
A funeral mass for Horton was held Tuesday, May 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Plantersville with the Rev. Ed Kucera officiating. Rite of committal followed in Smith-Floyd Cemetery in Plantersville. Horton is said to have loved outdoor life, including trail rides, hunting, fishing and riding dirt bikes.
